Some things you should
consider before getting a pet:
- Are you prepared to take care of your pet
throughout there whole life (approximately 15 - 18 years), even if
your family situation changes or you have to move?
- Do you live away from a main road?
- Are you willing to provide access to inside your home for your
pet, not
expecting it to sleep in an outbuilding/shed etc?
- Do all people living in your household accept
acquiring a new pet?
- If you are living in a rented accommodation: are
pets allowed?
- Do you have enough space for a pet and are you
willing and able to fit up your home in a suitable way for a pet (sleeping
places for the pet, safety measures for windows, balcony)?
- Do you have enough time for a pet? (Someone who
is working full-time and enjoys additionally time consuming hobbies, which
take his/her time on weekends and in the evenings, is certainly not a very
suitable pet owner!)
- Can you afford a pet ownership financially? (This includes not only the
costs for buying the pet, but also the monthly living costs for food etc, the routine vaccinations or other veterinary costs, costs for
accessories, etc.)
- If you have young children do they already
understand or are they old enough to realize and accept that a pet is not a toy, but a living being
with its own emotions and needs?
- Is a vacation arrangement set up for your pet while you are away on
holidays?
Do you accept that, although a pet can be trained to a certain extent, you
definitely cannot expect or force her to be submissive and obedient like a
dog?
If you answered yes to all the
questions above then you can provide a safe and enjoyable life for your pet,
there is a lot more involved to looking after a pet properly than most
people think
Take some time to consider if what
you are doing is the right choice not just for you but for the pet
